Mostra Brasil - New Filmmakers
Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (2005)
Brazil
1942. Two very different men meet in the dry uplands of Brazil: German Johann, a desertor from World War II, who has taken a job selling a new miraculous drug, aspirin; and Ranulfo, a local inhabitant and one of the many farmers driven off their land by the pitiless northeastern drought. Johann is in need of an assistant and engages the services of Ranulfo. Together they travel the dusty roadways over the Brazilian hinterland in a truck. They show the residents of the minute villages a film on the new remedy - for the majority, a first experience with cinema. Journeying is also an opportunity to share two very different experiences of life, the German, urban and educated, and the illiterate Brazilian more versed in various useful expedients for day-to-day living.
